Quitting smoking depression: are you depressed?

February 28, 2011

smoking and depressionMaybe you know, maybe not, but not only smoking itself is blamed for causing depression within smokers group. There is also quitting smoking depression, as it called. Symptoms of depression were considered to be one of the frequent consequences of smoking cessation. As it appeared to be now everyone was… wrong. If you believe in the results of recent studies, of course.

So studies have revealed that quitting smoking depression is bullshit. Few dozens of smokers have taken part in this research. Each of them was ready to quit smoking and none of them was feeling depressed or anxious. Certain tests were held to prove it. During the next 9 months after the beginning of this experiment people were followed by researchers somehow with the use of the Internet. Participants of this experiment were living they casual lives but without smoking.

Jeez… and what do you think? Almost none of those people have shown any signs of depression. Almost no one was feeling anxious during these nine months as well. Or they were a great group of optimistic brave hearts, or quitting smoking depression is a fantasy of tobacco tycoons, imposed upon us to prevent us from kicking the habit for good.

Well – now I can share with you my private experience. I was depressed while smoking. Heavily depressed. It was not about smoking, but the habit was something that made me anxious from time to time. And after half-a-year and nine months after quitting smoking… depression was altogether in the past. So if you want quit smoking – don’t be afraid of depression symptoms.

You won’t face anything heavier than you feel now if you smoke. And studies only prove it. You can make sure for yourself here: http://ntr.oxfordjournals.org/content/13/3/209.abstract.
